History of Colloidal Silver
In common use prior to the introduction of antibiotics Colloidal Silver
was used widely in hospitals and has been known as a bactericide for at
least 1200 years. It is known that in ancient civilization the wealthy
stored and ate their food from silver vessels to keep bacteria from growing.
The term "Blue Bloods" is said to have come about from royalty
eating from silver place settings. American settlers often put silver
dollars in milk containers to delay its spoilage. Not until the late 1800's
did western scientists understand what had been known for thousands of
years - that silver is a powerful germ fighter! After scientists and doctors
explored the possibilities of using colloids as medicine, the suspension
known as "Colloidal Silver" became widely used in medicine as
one of the mainstays of anti-microbial treatment. Results showed Colloidal
Silver to be highly germicidal, yet harmless and nontoxic to humans. Unfortunately,
its fame as a superior infection-fighting agent became short lived as
new prescription antibiotic drugs became available. Now after thirty
years, many types of bacteria have acquired immunity to these drugs.
What Experts Have Said About Colloidal Silver
Colloidal silver has proven particularly effective in cases of microbial
infection. Dr. Henry Crooks found that "Silver in the colloidal state
is highly germicidal, quite harmless to humans and absolutely nontoxic.
Rather than in a chemical compound, the silver in the colloidal state
may be applied in a much more concentrated form, with correspondingly
better results. All viruses, fungus, bacterium, streptococcus, staphylococcus,
and other pathogenic organisms are killed in three or four minutes upon
contact. There are no side effects whatsoever from the highest concentrations."
Dr. Robert Becker, author of the 1980's best selling book The Body Electric,
recognized a correlation between low silver levels in the human body,
and sickness. He said a silver deficiency in humans was responsible for
the improper functioning of the immune system. Dr. Becker's experiments
conclude that silver works on the full spectrum of pathogens without any
side effects or damage to any part of the body. He also states that the
silver was doing something more than killing disease organisms, It was
also causing major growth stimulation of injured tissues. Burn patients
and elderly patients noticed more rapid healing. He discovered that cancer
cells change back to normal cells in the presence of electrically generated
colloidal silver. All strains of pathogens he tested, even those resistant
to antibiotics, were killed by colloidal silver.
From the article "Silver, Our Mightiest Germ Fighter," in Science
Digest, March, 1978: "As an antibiotic, silver kills over 650 disease
causing organisms, and resistant strains fail to develop. Silver is the
best all-around germ fighter we have and is absolutely nontoxic! Doctors
report that, taken internally, it works against syphilis, cholera, malaria
diabetes and severe burns. Richard L. Davies, executive director of the
Silver Institute which monitors silver technology in 37 countries, reports:
'In four years we've described 87 important new medical uses for silver.'
Dr. Bjorn Nordstrom, of the Karolinska Institute, Sweden, has used colloidal
silver in his cancer treatment method. He says the whole thing is quite
simple. Colloidal silver, used in conjunction with other natural therapies
developed by Dr. Nordstrom, brought rapid remission in cancer patients
given up on by other doctors.
"What we have actually done was rediscover the fact that silver
killed bacteria, which had been known for centuries... when antibiotics
were discovered, clinical uses for silver as an antibiotic were discarded."
- Dr. Robert O. Becker, M.D. Dr. Harry Margraf of St. Louis concluded
"Silver is the best all around germ-fighter we have."
Based on laboratory tests with colloidal silver, destructive bacteria,
virus, and fungus organisms are killed within minutes of contact, Larry
C. Ford, M.D, of the Department of Ohstetrics and Gynecology, UCLA School
of Medicine, Center For The Health Sciences reported in a letter dated
November 1, 1988:
(1) "I tested them (the silver solutions) using standard antimicrobial
tests for disinfectants. The silver solutions were antibacterial for concentrations
of 105 organisms per ml. of Streptococcus Pyogenes, Staphylococcus Aurcus,
Neisseria Gonorrhea, Gardnerella Vaginalis, Salmonella Typhi, and other
enteric pathogens, and fungicidal for Candida Albicans, Candida Globata,
and M. Furfur." Some of the negative reaction that colloidal silver
received in the early 1900's, "was due to a premature supply of improperly
prepared and unstable colloids... Shortly after the definite recognition
of the colloidal nature of the chief body fluids was affected, the enormous
possibilities which might result from the application of colloidal disinfectants
and medicines were rapidly recognized."
(2) Colloidal silver appears to be one of the greatest discoveries
in natural preventive health care of all time. When properly prepared,
colloidal silver is a completely non-toxic, tasteless, internally and
externally applicable, broad-spectrum germ fighter and disinfectant, which
can significantly reduce the length and severity of many viral and bacterial
infections. N. R. Thompson of Runcorn Health Laboratory in England recognized
that "To primitive life forms, oligodynamic silver is as toxic as
the most powerful chemical disinfectants and this, coupled with its relative
harmlessness to animate life (i.e. mammals), gives it great potential
as a disinfectant."

fashioned answer to failing antibiotics By Loretta Weston. Prior
to 1938, many doctors used a natural substance in treating numerous ailments.
However, with the discovery of penicillin in the 1940's, this old-fashioned
remedy was placed in the back of the closet and nearly forgotten. Today,
the dilemma of resistant bacteria has sent researchers back to the test
tubes scrambling for new answers to old questions. Some researchers believe
they have found those answers in colloidal silver (CS), the solution that
was used during the 1800's, and then discarded as newer, patentable, more
profitable ideas emerged. CS is today's hottest topic in the health food
and supplements community. From burns to viruses to bacteria to fungus,
health advisors are publishing case after astonishing case of positive
results from the use of this new old- fashioned wonder drug. Even cancer
and AIDS patients are claiming alleged benefits from colloidal silver.
An example of such cases is this testimonial: "A 65 year old diabetic
cut himself on the leg. He washed and bandaged it but as often happened
with diabetes, the pain persisted, and the cut grew into a sore. Soon
it became bigger than that bandage, and he had to apply a dressing. Still,
it grew bigger and ugly. In desperation he went to a clinic. His sore
was diagnosed as a "stasis ulcer." For a year, one treatment
after another was tried. Nothing, including penicillin and sulfonamide,
could heal the ulcer. If his condition had continued unchecked, his leg
probably would have been amputated. But finally he was referred to a clinic
that treated skin ulcers with a new silver compound. This promptly stopped
growth of all bacteria. In less than two months the ulcer was completely
healed."
The essence of colloid: Colloid (KOL' OID) refers to a substance that
consists of ultra-fine particles that are suspended in a medium of different
matter (i.e. a non-soluble mineral suspended in water). These particles
are typically 0.01 to 0.001 of a micron in diameter, or about four hundred
thousandths to four millionths of an inch. About one billion of these
particles could fit into a cube four one hundredths of an inch in size.
Some researchers, such as Dr. Leonard Keene Hirschberg, A.M., M.D. of
Johns Hopkins, believe that the potential of colloidal silver is just
beginning to be discovered. Unlike antibiotics, which are specific only
to bacteria, CS has a positive charge, which enables it to attach itself
electrically to certain enzymes needed by anaerobic (bad) bacteria, viruses,
yeasts, and fungus resulting in the destruction of these enzymes. Further
indication is that these bacteria cannot develop a resistance to silver,
as they do with antibiotics, because silver attacks their food source,
rather than them directly.
Modern Colloidal Silver applications
Silver has been used for generations in goblets, silverware, and other
food areas because of the belief that it inhibits diseases. In more recent
times, the former Soviet Union used silver to sterilize recycled water
on their space shuttles. Many international airlines use silver water
filters to ensure safe drinking water for passengers. The Swiss have approved
use of these filters in homes and offices. Some US city municipalities
use silver in treatment of sewage and is sometimes used to purify swimming
pool water to avoid the stinging of the eyes that chlorine causes. CS
also purifies drinking water. Silver has become the latest agent in the
fight against airborne toxins, as well other industrial poisons, in the
Japanese work place.
Afred Searle, founder of the giant Searle Pharmaceuticals (now Monsanto)
stated, "Applying colloidal silver to human subjects has been done
in a large number of cases with astonishingly successful results. For
internal administration ... it has the advantage being rapidly fatal to
pathogens without toxic action on its host. It is quite stable."
Further information indicates that CS does not cause harmful interactions
with other medications.
Science Digest cites CS as "...a wonder of modem medicine,"
and further states, "Antibiotics kill perhaps a half dozen different
disease organisms, but silver kills some 650. Resistant strains fail to
develop. Moreover, silver is virtually non toxic."
Dr. Robert 0. Becker of Syracuse University stated, "All of the
organisms that we tested were sensitive to the electrically 'generated
silver ion, including some that were resistant to all known antibiotics...In
no case were any undesirable side effects of the silver treatment apparent."
Bioterrorism calls for a powerful antibiotic. Former CIA microbiologist,
Larry Harris, stated that colloidal silver is known to be effective against
multiple disease-causing pathogenic microorganisms, including anthrax,
diphtheria, influenza, whooping cough, and typhoid. In fact, it appears
to be nature's most powerful antibiotic. For contaminated drinking water,
boil to kill off any heat-susceptible microorganisms, add two ounces of
fresh colloidal silver per half gallon, and shake or stir briskly. Let
the water set for ten minutes, shake briskly again and let set for another
ten minutes before consuming. According to experts, no microorganism ever
tested has been able to stay alive for more than six minutes when exposed
directly to colloidal silver. It is also recognized as one of the most
potent antidotes for food poisoning.
How does colloidal silver work? It has been recognized that silver disables
the specific enzyme that many forms of bacteria, viruses and fungi utilize
for their metabolism. When silver nears a virus, fungi, bacterium or any
single-celled microbe it is effective against, it disables the oxygen-metabolism
enzyme. This destroys the microbe's ability to "breath" and
within a few minutes, the pathogen suffocates and dies. The dead germ
and its toxins are then cleared out of the body by the immune, lymphatic
and elimination systems. It is not exactly clear how silver disrupts the
enzymes in these single celled animals, but it is believed that the silver's
natural positive electrical charge is influential. This is why electrically
generated colloidal silver is the absolute best form of silver for fighting
infection and related infectious diseases.
Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics, which destroy beneficial bodily enzymes,
colloidal silver leaves our bodies tissue and cell enzymes intact, as
they are different than enzymes found in single celled pathogens. Thus
colloidal silver is generally considered safe for humans, pets, plants
and all multi-celled living matter. Some health care professionals believe
silver may be linked to the proper functioning of our immune system and
